Roger Lyons Obituary
1947 ~ 2013
Our grandfather, dad and husband, Roger Allen Lyons, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 26th, 2013 with his loving family surrounding him. He had just returned from a long and fun-filled army reunion (in Florida) and family vacation (in Ohio) and was feeling good and full of life during this time. We thank God for a life-well-lived and many, many happy memories.
Roger was born on April 28th, 1947, to Thomas Donald and Harriett Lyons in Bucyrus, Ohio, the 9th of 10 children. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Wynford High School in 1965. He served in Vietnam from 1967-68, earning a Purple Heart and 2 Bronze Stars. He returned to the states and worked in local factories, eventually become a salesman. He and Jennie Wagner were married on July 4th, 1970. While their two boys were young they lived in Bucyrus, OH and Marysville, TN before transferring with a job promotion to Midvale, UT in 1977.
Roger loved camping and hunting and fishing and three-wheeling (back when those were legal) with his family. He excelled at encouraging his sons in sports, school and their faith, but wasn't the biggest challenge on the basketball court given the fact that he was only 5'6". He relished cherry pie, limburger cheese and fried bologna sandwiches, a competitive pinochle game, golfing, being a member of the Elks, hanging with the "Rusty Zipper Club," and enjoying the view of the Wasatch Mountains from the back deck of his house. Since his retirement, he has reconnected with former army buddies from the Big Red One and has participated with these wonderful friends in several Army reunions. He and his vet buddies have received a great deal of healing from these connections.
Roger is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jennie Lyons of Sandy, UT, sons, Chris of Longview, WA and Tom of Berkeley, CA, grandchildren, Isabella, Katie, Nikki, and Joey. He is also survived by his siblings, Rich, Lois, Joyce, Ray, Charlie, and Sandy. (As well as many, many other close relatives in Crawford County, OH.) He is preceded in death by his father, TD Lyons, mother, Harriet Lyons, siblings, Margaret, Bob, and Glen. A Celebration of Life gathering will be hosted in Sandy this week and a memorial service held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sulfur Springs, OH next spring.
