She was born on November 25, 1924 in Logan, Utah to Charles Reuben Howell and Verna Marie Hansen. Her parents divorced prior to her birth. When Shirley was five years old, her mother married John Wilkes Matkin. She had three brothers, one sister, three step-brothers and three step-sisters. Shirley graduated from North Cache High School in 1943 and began working for Geneva Steel. She joined the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve, in 1945 and was honorably discharged in 1946. She married James Madison May on February 5, 1949. They were sealed in the Logan Temple on June 26, 1959. Shirley was the mother of three children, James (Susan) May, Shirley Ann (Robert) Fotheringham, and Jack (Vicki) May. She was blessed with seven grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Shirley began working for Provo High School in the lunch department in 1968 and retired in 1988. She made many life-long friends while working as a lunch lady.
She was preceded by her mother; step-father; husband; brothers, Wade and Doyle Howell; and sister, Athalie Allen. She is survived by her brother, Jack; her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends who love her dearly.
