L. Fullmer Obituary

L. Gene Fullmer
"Champ"
Lawrence Gene Fullmer passed peacefully from this earth on April 27, 2015 due to complications related to Alzheimer's disease.
Gene was born July 21, 1931 to Lawrence"Tuff" and Mary Emma Iff Fullmer. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1949. He worked at Kennecott Copper Mine for several years and proudly served in the Korean War. Upon his return he married his sweetheart, Dolores Holt, October 13, 1955 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They raised 2 daughters and 2 sons.
Gene is known for his success in the boxing ring. He began his fighting career at age 12 for local trainer Marv Jensen. After an impressive amateur career he debuted as a professional in 1951. The highlight of his career came on January 2, 1957 when he defeated Sugar Ray Robinson in a 15 round battle for the World Middleweight Championship. He then lost the Championship in a rematch to Sugar Ray in May of 1957. Gene regained the vacant Middleweight Championship by defeating Carmen Basilio on August 28, 1959. He successfully defended his title seven times and fought in a total of 13 championship fights. He compiled an impressive record of 55-6-3. Gene was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991. His greatest loss was not suffered in the ring but when his wife Dolores passed away on January 2, 1983. He was fortunate to find his second sweetheart Karen Davey; they were married on May 19, 1984. They were approaching their 31st wedding anniversary at the time of Gene's passing.
After his boxing career Gene found pleasure in farming, raising mink and racing quarter horses. Gene was instrumental in the formation of the Golden Gloves in the Rocky Mountain Region. Along with his brothers Don and Jay, Gene spent countless hours coaching young men at the Fullmer Brothers Boxing Gym. He and Karen also spent many years serving on the Salt Lake County Fair Board. Gene always valued lessons that he learned from Marv Jensen regarding honesty, integrity and hard work. Gene never took for granted an opportunity to pass these lessons on to others. He also served as a Sunday School and Priesthood teacher for many years in the LDS Church. He will be remembered for his witty and cheerful personality. He was constantly telling jokes and pulling pranks.
Gene is preceded in death by his first wife Dolores; parents Tuff and Mary; sister Colleen; brothers Don and Jay; grandson Rex Newlun. Gene is survived by his wife Karen; four children: Kaye (Michael), DeLaun (Vicki), Bart (Tracy), Marianne (Rick) and his two step sons Vard and Jeffrey Davey. He will be truly missed by 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends.
The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Legacy Memory Care and Brighton Hospice for their tender care.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 4, 2015, 11:30 am at the West Jordan Mountain View Stake, 2901 West 9000 South where viewings will be held Sunday, May 3, 2015, 5-9:00 pm. and Monday, May 4, 2015, 9:30-11:00 am prior to funeral services. My dad would always talk about the Fullmer family. He grew up in the Salt Lake Valley, and had something nice to say about all of them. He even ran into Gene at a doctor's office a few years ago. I was impressed my dad had such a famous acquaintance. May your father's passing leave you with peace and the knowledge that he left lasting impressions. My dad is now in the end stages of dementia, but I bet if I mention Gene's name to him he will tell me the stories all over again.

Mrs. Fullmer: My sisters and I were very fortunate to have met Gene at Legacy where he and our father,Del Kerr, met and became fast friends before our father pasted on 4/18/15. He was quite the fellow and was so sweet when we seen him walking the halls. Our condolences to you and your family on his passing. We truly know how you are all feeling, sad but happy he is in a lovely place with all those who have gone before. The Kerr Family.

My kids and I bumped into Gene at the County Fair a few years ago and enjoyed a wonderful visit with him. I so enjoyed talking with him and enjoying his sense of humor! What a great honor to have been able to share an afternoon with him and what a great memory we have of Gene as a person! God bless your family through this time, may you have many happy memories to share in the years to come.

Thanks for the many memories.

Condolences to your family, Gene. Remember we represented Utah twice at the National Golden Gloves tournament in Chicago. The sponsoring Ogden Elks Club gave me $1200 to entertain the Utah boxers, and then disappeared. You were a great fighter, fun to be with. May your family be blessed to know that I know what a great guy you have been. Love you, Jay Horrocks

Gene spoke at a cub scout dinner around 1966 in Aberdeen ID, where I shook his hand as a 9 year old. One of the highlights of my life. Condolences to his family and friends, he was a great one.

My name is LorrieAnne Silvey. My father was Dean F. Silvey. My father knew this man and talked about him often. My father was born in 1933 and died in 1997. My father talked about how he tried boxing but soon discovered that he was out of his element. The conversation with Mr. Fullmer was mentioned by my dad at times to help me when I had challenges. Just want to say thank you to Mr. Fullmer's family for giving me the opportunity to share a story that shows just how much I appreciate Mr. Fullmer's involvement in my father's life. The second hand advice still helps me today. God's Blessings to us all.

It was all about Friday night fights in our house during the 1950s. I was a little girl from Murray, Utah, sitting in front of a big box next to my dad when Gene Fullmer defeated Sugar Ray Robinson to become the Middleweight champion of the world. Gene Fullmer was one of a kind, a champion in the ring and a humble man outside the ring.

I will miss his wicked sense of humor most. He delighted in embarrassing Karen, every chance he got. He usually got a couple of the rest of us in the process! He was, for the fighter he was, one of the kindest, gentlest and truly sweetest men God ever gave this earth. Karen, Kaye, Marianne, DeLaun and Bart, thank you for sharing your dad with me and my family. We are thinking of you.

You will be missed by all, especially by your family and by all who called you a friend. You have lived a full life and will find much joy and happiness in the joyous reunion with you 1st wife, parents and other family member that await you. We first met at parent teacher night in the old WJ Grade School and later at many other places and of course, at the County Fairs.
