Rhyan Harold Lee "Shorty" Rhyan, of Gainesville, FL, passed away in Gainesville on Monday, January 20, 2014 after a brief illness. He was 90 years old. Shorty was born to Leo and Louisa Rhyan in Springfield, Ohio on February 12, 1923. He served in the United States Navy during WWII as the ship's cook on the battleship, U. S. S. Arkansas and the mine sweeper, U. S. S. Puck. His tours included the Atlantic, Europe, and the western Caribbean. After the war, Shorty became employed at General Motors in Columbus, Ohio. He retired after 30 years of service in 1977 as supervisor of General Stores in the Shipping and Receiving department. Once retired, he and his wife, Betty and daughter, Cheryl moved to Englewood Florida. Shorty was very active in the Fraternal Order of the Moose in Columbus, and in the local VFW and American Legion in Englewood and Ocala. He was the Past Seam Squirrel of the Military Order of the Cootie and a life time member of the VFW. Shorty and his wife Betty moved to Gainesville, FL in 2002 to be closer to family. Shorty enjoyed riding his 3-wheel bike in Gainesville and spending time driving all over Florida with his wife. They especially liked visiting local parks and spending time at the beach where Betty was an avid shark-tooth hunter. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jo Vance Rhyan. He is survived by his three children, sons, Harold L. "Rusty" Rhyan (Diane) of Flintville, Tenn., Patrick L. Rhyan (Denise) of Madison, Alabama; and daughter, Cheryl Ann Jordan Lee (David) of Gainesville, Florida; grandchildren Paul, Kelly, Dusty, Molly, Libby and Will; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside Service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on January 31, 2014 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606.
