Cousins COL (Ret.) John Hartley Cousins, age 84, passed away on March 28, 2013. Born December 21, 1928, John was raised in Fairmont, West Virginia. A graduate of the United States Military Academy in 1951, John served his country for 28 years in the US Army Corps of Engineers. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and his career included numerous tours prior to retiring in 1979. A professional civil engineer, John attended the University of Illinois where he received his Masters of Science in Engineering. He was a long standing member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. John's first stay in Ohio was in Cincinnati where he served in the Corps of Engineers' Ohio River District office, and received the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel. John returned to Ohio after his retirement from the Army and joined the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), as the Chief of the Division of Water. He remained active with the Chief Engineer's office at ODNR until his retirement in 1994. During retirement, John loved golf-playing it, watching it on television and talking about it. He became a member of a golf group affectionately named the 'Roundbellies' that traveled around central Ohio playing a wide variety of courses. John was an active member of Northwest Christian Church where he served as an elder. His church family was a very important part of his life. John was preceded in death by his wife Mary Edna Cousins, father Bertram Cousins, Sr., mother Eva Hartley Cousins, brother Bertram Cousins, Jr. He is survived by children, Mary Lou Heaner (Bill) of Atlanta, GA, Julie England (Steve) of Oviedo, FL, Bert Cousins (Jackie) of Columbus; grandchildren, Will (Sarah) Heaner, John Heaner, Evan England, Caroline England, Melanie Cousins, Mitchell Cousins; and great-grandchild, Elise Lillian Heaner; and many nieces and nephews. John will be sorely missed by his beloved family, wonderful neighbors, his cherished golf buddies, and his many devoted friends. A Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday April 6, 2013 at NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 1340 Fishinger Road, Columbus, OH 43221. Arrangements by Rutherford Funeral Home at Powell, Powell, OH.
