Marjorie Nield Austin Obituary
Austin Marjorie Nield Austin, age 91, of Upper Arlington, OH, died Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Mrs. Austin was born August 19, 1922 in Stroudsburg, PA, the only child of J. Gilbert and Laura Eloise (Nash) Nield. Mrs. Austin graduated in 1943 from the University of Michigan, with a B.A. in Political Science, at the age of 20. Mrs. Austin was first employed by the Cincinnati, OH law firm of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister. She joined the Foreign Service of the U.S. in 1945 and worked in U.S. embassies in London, Rome, Trieste, Manilla and Istanbul until 1951. In 1952, Mrs. Austin began working for the U.S.A.F. Air Attache Branch in Washington, DC. Mrs. Austin married her late husband, Robert Campbell Austin, a U.S. Naval Officer, in 1958 at the Washington Cathedral in Washington, DC. They lived in San Diego, Washington DC and Philadelphia until Mr. Austin retired from the U.S. Navy. In 1974, they moved to Upper Arlington while Mr. Austin worked for Columbia Gas Systems. Mrs. Austin and her late husband were active in their community, supporting higher education, the arts, and several charities. They sponsored foreign students at Ohio State University through the Rotary International Program. They were active in International Executive Service Corp, living in and giving expertise to third-world countries. Mrs. Austin traveled the world, on her own and with her husband, and made friends in many countries. Mrs. Austin is survived by her late husband's nephew and nieces. She is also survived by her godson, Robert B. "Chip" Hogan; and her special friends and companions, Dolores Evans, Jean Hoffman, Maria Marron, Sally Powell, Ruth Ann Sweeney, and Julie Tucker. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 2151 Dorset Road, Columbus, with The Rev. Paul St. Germain officiating. Interment will be held later at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. If desired, contributions may be made to a in Mrs. Austin's memory. Arrangements by SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL.
