McCarty Richard N. McCarty, PhD, D.O., ACOFP, 77, of Powell, Ohio, passed away peacefully at Riverside Methodist Hospital on Sunday, March 9, 2014 with his family at his side. He was born in Lansing, Michigan on October 23, 1936. Richard graduated from The University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1958, where he was a drummer in the marching band; he received a PhD from Indiana University in Organic Chemistry in 1972, and his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1975, followed by completion of a rotating Internship at Doctors Hospital, Columbus, OH. Richard was a Family Physician practicing in Groveport, Ohio for 38 years. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church Men's Club and Knights of Columbus, Council Nos. 10765. He was a past member of The Scioto Country Club, Upper Arlington, OH. Richard began his career in chemistry at Dow Corning Corporation in Midland, MI, where he was directly involved in silicone and medicinal research. While there he developed and held over 33 patents used worldwide, including for silicone caulk, sunscreen and hair straightener. Much of his work was in conjunction with Battelle Memorial Institute's early research in artificial heart transplants and silicone breast implants. He later was an Associate Editor for Chemical Abstracts, Columbus, OH and served on the Faculty Department of the OSU Chemistry Department. He was a member of the American Chemical Society. In his medical career, he was an active member of The American Association of Osteopathic Medicine, The Ohio Osteopathic Association, Member of the 6th District Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, The Ohio Association of Family Practice as well as serving on the clinical faculty of Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, training rotating medical students in his office in Family and Geriatric Medicine. He was the author of the Guide for Family Practice Physicians to receive their Fellow in Family Medicine. Preceded in death by his parents Dr. Charles and Alice (LeCour) McCarty. His is survived by his wife, Eloise of 53 years; children, Steven McCarty, Esq., Seattle, WA, Susan (Matthew) Pohlman, Delaware, OH, Anne McCarty, Columbus, OH, and Kevin McCarty, Esq., Upper Arlington, OH; five grandchildren, Eric and Erin Pohlman, and David, Grace, and Charles McCarty; a sister, Katheryn (Fergus) Barton, Cadillac, MI; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2014 at RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL, 450 West Olentangy Street (Powell Road / S.R. 750 1/4 mile east of Sawmill Pkwy.), Powell, Ohio, 43065. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2014 at St. JOAN OF ARC CATHOLIC CHURCH, 10700 Liberty Rd., Powell, OH 43065.
