Needham Robert Dudley Needham, age 84, April 13, 2014. He was born February 13, 1930 to the late Jeannette (Ward) and Benjamin F. F. Needham. In 1950, Rob and Marie Louise McKinley were married in Jacksonville, Florida, while Rob was serving in the Navy during the Korean War. He was very proud to have served. In 1952, he and Marie came to Columbus, where Rob worked for North American Aviation. They also lived in Pittsburgh, where Rob graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and in Cleveland, where he worked for American Greetings. They returned to Columbus in 1959 and Rob again worked for North American as a technical illustrator, retiring from North American Rockwell in 1990. He also worked for many years at Columbus Show Case as a graphic designer. Rob was a lifelong learner and an avid reader, especially about history. In the 1960s he was the Official Artist for the Ohio Battle Flag preservation project, for which he made paintings of nearly 500 battle flags from the Civil War. Over the years, he was a member of the Company of Military Historians, the North-South Skirmish Association and the Brigade of the American Revolution. He was also a master paper modeler, admired for his skill in building highly detailed ships and airplanes. Rob and Marie also enjoyed doing genealogy research, and they loved to travel and meet new people. Rob was an enthusiastic supporter of his children's and grandchildren's activities. He was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Rob is survived by his sister, Mary Lou Lundquist; three daughters, Jeannette (Mark) Gist, Ruth (Richard) Leonard, and Linda (David) Mills; a son, Daniel (Cathy) Needham; a granddaughter, Elizabeth (Catherine) Evans-Gist; five grandsons, Scott Wilson, Andrew Needham, Neil (Holly) Leonard, Thomas Leonard and Skyler Mills; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins as well as numerous dear friends. In addition to his parents, Rob was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie, to whom he was married for 62 years; his sisters, Frances Lyman and Natalie Freeborn; a daughter, Rebecca Wilson; a son-in-law, Charles Wilson; and a granddaughter, Penny Wilson. Visiting hours on Saturday, April 19, 10 a.m.-12Noon at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 35 E. Stanton St., Columbus, to be followed by a funeral service at 12Noon. Private graveside service at Union Cemetery on Monday, April 21. Arrangements handled by SHAW-DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, 4341 N. High St., Columbus.
