Gordon Samuel Cohen Gordon, age 89, of Bexley, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013. He is preceded in death by his parents Ephraim and Jennie Gordon, beloved brothers Jack, Dr. David, Russell, Karpel and Lawrence Gordon, beloved sisters Ruth Yabroff, Eleanor Brick, Florence Kaplan and Esther Greenfield. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Gordon; and beloved daughters, Jody (Jeffrey) Scheiman, Lisa (Harvey) Schwager and Amy Gordon; grandchildren, Jordan (fiancÃ© Alexandra Cohen) Scheiman and Jamie Scheiman, Adam and Daniel Schwager; sisters-in-law, Maxine (James) Bally and Ida Gordon; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was born in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from East High School. He was a high school varsity athlete in football, wrestling and baseball. He played on the freshman Ohio State University football team under Coach Paul Brown. He served as a Naval officer in World War II. After the war, he was the catcher for the 740 AC semi-pro fastball team. He was later inducted into the Leo Yassenoff Sports Hall of Fame. He was active in several organizations over the years including Temple Israel, where he served as the President of Brotherhood and was a lifelong member, Leo Yassenoff Jewish Center and The Wexner Heritage Village. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 21 at the EPSTEIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3232 E. Main St. with Rabbi Misha Zinkow officiating. Shiva will be observed at the Gordon residence on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are preferred to Wexner Heritage Village or The James Comprehensive Cancer Center.
