Fitzgerald William Michael "Mike" Fitzgerald, age 74, of Wexford, PA, died April 7, 2013 of complications arising from a stroke. Born December 27, 1938 to the late Jean and Edward Fitzgerald of Columbus, OH. Beloved husband of 50 years to Susan Burt Fitzgerald; father of Mollie Jean Fitzgerald and Michael Edward Fitzgerald (Kristene Matelan- fiancée); and grandfather of Susan Abigail Larsen. He is also survived by sister, Sandy Westfall (Robert) of Davis, CA; and two nieces, Kathy Earls and Katie Lippincott of Columbus, OH. Preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Fitzgerald Felty. A graduate of Upper Arlington High School in 1957, he earned both his Bachelor of Science and his graduate degree, Doctor of Dentistry, at Ohio State University. He received a hospital dental internship with the U.S. Public Health Service in Boston, MA and then served as a dental officer for two years in Pittsburgh and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. During that time he was also an instructor in the Department of Oral Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. An avid outdoorsman, Mike then followed his dream and in 1969, with his wife, co-founded Frontiers International, a pre-eminent travel service for discriminating sportsmen and non-sporting travelers alike. He was an icon and a pioneer in the outdoor adventure travel business. He was very highly regarded and well-liked by all those that met him. Mike will be remembered best for his active mind, his gentle nature, his inimitable sense of humor, and his passion for Duke Basketball, the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and bacon purveyors across the country. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 21 at Allegheny Country Club, Country Club Road, Sewickley, PA at 2 p.m. followed by a reception.
