John Hoiska, 95, of Sturgeon Bay and formerly of Mass City, Michigan, passed away at Pine Crest Village with his family by his side on November 4, 2013. He was born on August 26, 1918, in Wainola, Michigan to Samuel and Wilhelmina (Ahopelto) Hoiska. John served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and 1940 and enlisted in Army in September 1941. He also served 4 years in the South Pacific during WWII and was discharged as Tech Sergeant in 1945.
In September 1946, he married Helmi Lehtimaki. John worked in Detroit at Ford Motor Company until 1948 and then moved to Mass City where he worked 30 years and retired from the Milwaukee Railroad.
John was a member of Wainola Lutheran Church, Mass City VFW Post #4167, Crystal Falls American Legion Post #87, and was a former member of Kaleva Lodge and Maple Grove Cemetery Association.
He is survived by 4 children, Judy (Tom) Ferguson, Germantown; Ted (Jenniece) Hoiska, Sturgeon Bay; Derrick (Sue) Hoiska, Fredricksburg, VA; and Julie (Dave) Osen, DePere; 9 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and one sister, Sylvia Hakala, Taylor, MI. He was preceded in death by his wife; 3 brothers, Urho, Charlie, and Freino; and 2 sisters, Tynne and Sadie.
Memorial services will be 12 noon, Saturday, November 16, 2013, at the Forbes Funeral Home, Sturgeon Bay, the Rev. Tim Malek officiating. Friends may call after 11:00 a.m. Saturday until time of services. Inurnment and Veteran services will be at Maple Grove Cemetery, Greenland Michigan at a later date.
