Schmidtke, John

John Paul (Jack) Schmidtke passed away peacefully at his home on May 31. He was born in 1942, in Green Bay and graduated from East High School in 1960. He earned a chemical engineering degree from UW-Madison in 1965 and worked at Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan for several years before switching careers. Jack then attended the University of Minnesota Law School, graduating with honors and subsequently worked for many years at Oppenheimer Law firm in St. Paul, Minnesota.

From beekeeping to crafting stained glass art, Jack is remembered as a lifelong learner who read voraciously and took pleasure in laughing with friends, telling stories, and exploring all things Door County. A former youth soccer coach, he especially savored watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events. He was an avid sailor who also enjoyed motorcycling, amateur car racing, Sheepshead, and meals at Kroll's and Chili John's in Green Bay.

Preceding Jack in death were his parents Henry and Lowaine, and surviving him are his wife Susan, sons, Erich (Erika) and Peter (Courtney), grandchildren, Otto and Willa, brother, David (Rose Mary), and sister-in-law, Marilyn.

Jack was indebted to the UW-Madison and University of Minnesota organ transplant programs as well as to Unity Hospice. Family will gather at a future date to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Second Chance Foundation, PO Box 131462 Roseville, MN 55113. Forbes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
