John (Jack) Whittemore Weis, 85, Sister Bay, Wis., died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Good Samaritan Scandia Village in Sister Bay. He was born Oct. 28, 1927, in Evanston, Ill., to Harold Leslie and Synia (Whittemore) Weis. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Faith Whittemore Weis Watts On Feb. 9, 1957, he married Jane Wescott Weis, his wife of over 56 years, at St. Mathews Church, Evanston, Ill., where the family was active for over 50 years.
Survivors include three children, James Wheeler Weis (Nicolette Glover), William Wescott Weis (Susan Utley) and Elizabeth Weis Lombardi (Brian) and five grandchildren, Logan Christopher Weis, Justin Kimball Weis, Mackenzie Jo Lombardi, Bailey Elizabeth Lombardi, and Morgan Weis Lombardi.
Jack graduated from Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Ill., in 1946 and joined the Army in 1947 serving in Korea between WWII and the Korean War. He attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa and transferred to Michigan State University to obtain a degree in Landscape Architecture. He was employed by McFadzean and Everly, Ltd. in 1952 and remained with the same firm after it was acquired by Land Design Collaborative in 1990, designing zoos, cultural centers, and parks retiring as a consultant in 1998.
Having spent many years in Evanston, Jack and Jane moved to Sister Bay, Wis., retiring not far from their summer cottage in Ephraim. He was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Sister Bay and regularly volunteered at The Ridges, The Clearing, Kiwanis Club of Northern Door, and joined his coffee hour buddies at Al Johnson's every weekday morning.
A memorial service for Mr. Weis will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Sister Bay Moravian Church.
