Olive Bright Wallace, 91, Iowa City, Iowa, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following a brief illness.|
Olive, daughter of the late Peter Peterson and wife Elisa, nee Engan, was born Feb. 4, 1922, in McGregor, Iowa. She was raised in McGregor. In 1938, the family moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where Olive graduated from St. Mary's High School and attended the University of Iowa. She was united in marriage to Charles Bright in 1946. Charles passed away in 1975. On Sept. 2, 1985, Olive was united in marriage to James Wallace. Jim passed away in 2004.
Olive was employed for many years as a secretary in the University of Iowa College of Education and later as the chief certification officer in the university's registrar's office. She retired in 1985.
When her sons were young, Olive served as a Cub Scout den mother and was on the PTA at Roosevelt Elementary School. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and served on the church council. She taught English as a second language and was a member of the senior support group. Her memberships included the Iowa Historical Society, the Archeological Society, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Norse Club and Hancher Guild.
Olive was preceded in death by two husbands, Charles Bright and James Wallace; parents, Peter and Elisa Peterson; five brothers; four sisters and one stepdaughter-in-law, Connie.
Olive is survived by two sons, Charles Bright and wife Susan, Washington, and Stanley See and wife Vicki, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one step son-in-law, John Grandrath, Pawleys Island, S.C.; three grandchildren, Caitlin, Charles and Stephanie; four stepgrandchildren and one great-grandchild, Parker.
Visitation was held from noon until 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, Iowa.
A funeral service followed at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Rob Dotzel officiating.
Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice or Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
