Carl Albert Fernandes Obituary
Carl Albert Fernandes
June 29, 1928- Feb. 2, 2014
Resident of Moraga
Peacefully passed away at home in Moraga after battling a debilitating nerve disease for the past two years. Born in San Francisco to parents Jaime and Rose, he is survived by Diana, his loving wife of 57 years, along with sons Chris and Craig.
He grew up in Oakland, attending Fremont High School, then volunteered for the Army during the Korean War. Spent two years in Japan, serving as one of General Douglas MacArthur's secretaries, responsible for transcribing letters and official correspondence. Returned to the US and later completed his education at San Jose State University, graduating with a degree in Journalism. After briefly working for UPI, he began a career at California Casualty, which would last nearly 40 years.
He quit smoking and took up tennis on his 40th birthday in 1968, a sport that would become his beloved obsession for the rest of his life.
A special thanks goes out to Sila Tupe, his caregiver during his last months, along with the nurses and staff at Amedisys, Hospice of the East Bay and the Veterans Administration in Martinez.
In lieu of flowers, the Fernandes family requests that donations be sent to either of these two entities:
