Donald M. Johnson of Walnut Creek, CA, passed away on July 14, 2014 at the age of 93.
Originally from Vancouver, Washington, he was a long time resident of Rossmoor and attended the Tice Valley United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Washington State University where he earned a BS in Chemistry in 1943, and an additional BS in Chemical Engineering in 1947. He worked for Standard Oil of California/Chevron for 37 years as the Corporate Chief Fire Protection Engineer worldwide before retiring and starting a consulting business as a Professional Engineer. He was an active member in the National Fire Protection Association since 1964, and was Chairman in 1980 where he became Member Emeritus on several committees. He was a Life Member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, as well as a Life Member of the Western Fire Chiefs Association. He was a Master Mason, and a member of the Burlingame Lodge for over 60 years.
He is survived by his two children Douglas Johnson, and Linda Johnson Hester, as well as one step-son Richard Hagberg. He is also survived by his two sisters, Dorothy Chase and Lenore Hicks, and their families. He was married to Dorothy Johnson, and was widowed by Mildred Johnson in 2003.
He was the proud grandfather of Stacy Emmert, Jaime Johnson, and Daniel Johnson, and the loving great-grandfather to four great-granddaughters. He had five step-grandchildren, Karen, Dana, Erik and Shannon Hagberg, and Aimee Mager.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during WWII, and was honorably discharged as a Captain. He traveled extensively worldwide during his career, and continued his love of travel during his retirement.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at 1:00 pm. at the Tice Valley United Methodist Church in Walnut Creek, Ca.
