Frank Porter Obituary
Frank R Porter Walnut Creek, CA. Former Resident Frank, age 96, passed away October 27, 2013 in Peoria, AZ. He was a man of great faith who along with his wife, Clara was an involved member of San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church for almost 30 years. He will be remembered fondly for his wonderful sense of humor, his exemplary work ethic and his love of singing. Frank was born to William S and Jennie Porter on December 12, 1916 in Seattle, WA. He grew up in a busy home with 12 siblings. He graduated from Chimacum High School, Chimacum WA and then from the University of Washington. In 1939, he married Clara Van Horn, whom he had known in high school and was his college sweetheart. Together they lived an adventurous life, and proudly celebrated their 73rd Anniversary on December 3, 2012. Frank began his career working for Boeing during WWII. Later as a civil engineer he worked in Washington State for Jefferson, Mason, and Pierce Counties. In 1965, Frank took a position with the Federal Bureau of Public Roads and was sent to Vientiane, Laos. Throughout his career with the federal government, he also held positions in LaPaz, Bolivia; St Thomas, US Virgin Islands; San Francisco, CA; and Albany, NY retiring in 1982 to a home he built himself on Mason Lake in Washington State. Better golfing weather called to him so he and Clara eventually moved to Walnut Creek CA where they filled their lives with travel and family. Only after the death of his beloved Clara in January 2013 did Frank move to Arizona to be closer to his daughter. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his daughter-in-law, Deb Porter and 6 siblings, Jane, Dick, Henry, Fred, Clinton, and Joanne. He is survived by his 4 children, Dick Porter (Kay) of Bellingham, WA, Larry Porter (Joan) of Diablo, CA, Bruce Porter of Bonney Lake, WA, and Kathie Simmons (Thomas) of Surprise, AZ, and 6 siblings, Jessie, Ruth, Iris, Stanley, Helen and John. Other survivors include his four granddaughters, Lori Ramsey, Beverly Porter (Leland Anderson), Jenn Kester (Ken) and Sumer Moriarity (Damian Leon) along with 7 great-grand children and a host of extended family. A celebration of Frank's life will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 1:30 PM at San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church, 902 Danville Blvd., Alamo, CA 94507. The family suggests a donation to the music fund of San Ramon Valley UMC in lieu of flowers.
