Gene S. Coburn M.D.
1920 - 2014
Resident of Lafayette
Gene S. Coburn, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at John Muir Memorial Hospital, after a short illness. Gene was the only child of Cecil and Evelyn Coburn and was a second-generation Californian, born in 1920 on the family homestead in Selma, California. He graduated from Selma Union High School in 1938 and attended Fresno State College until 1941, when he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After basic training at Camp Roberts, he was assigned to the Medical Corp and shipped out in February 1942. Gene was stationed at one of the first base hospitals for the Pacific Theater, and served until 1945 in Australia, New Guinea and Santa Barbara. Following the war, he resumed his studies at Fresno State, after which he attended Northwestern University Medical School, in Chicago, where he met Frances Friend, a fellow graduate student. Gene and Frances were married in 1948. After graduation in 1950, Gene completed his internship in Oakland, at Highland-Alameda County Hospital. In 1951, the Coburns moved to Pleasant Hill, where Gene practiced Family Medicine for 42 years. In 1972, he became a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Gene's family was the joy of his life, and he captured many happy events with his ever-present camera. He greatly enjoyed classical music and began studying piano as an adult, continuing lessons until age 92. His lifelong love of nature was formed during childhood trips with his parents to the Sierras. Gene transformed the property surrounding his Lafayette home into a forest of redwoods and oak trees grown from acorns he collected. Also an avid birder, Gene and his wife traveled extensively after his retirement. Gene followed a lifestyle of healthy eating and daily exercise. His family and friends loved his gentle nature and enjoyed his dry sense of humor and his wise and philosophical outlook on life.
Gene's survivors include his devoted wife of 65 years, Frances; his three daughters, Joan Morris, Leslie Hudson (Richard) and Marje Schuetze-Coburn (Stephan); five grandchildren, Andrew Morris (Diana), Emily Hudson, Jack Hudson, Ayla Schuetze-Coburn, and Anton Schuetze-Coburn; and two beloved first cousins, Beverly Potter and Nettie Loeffler.
A memorial service will be held at Hillcrest Congregational Church, 404 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523, on Saturday, August 30th at 10:00 AM. The service will be followed by a graveside burial and reception at Oakmont Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Save Mount Diablo, 1901 Olympic Boulevard, Suite 320, Walnut Creek, CA 94596, or to the .
