Henry "Harry" James McElroy
Resident of Martinez
Henry "Harry" James McElroy, 80, of Martinez, CA, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Friday, August 15, 2014 due to lung cancer.
He was born in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland on February 1, 1934, to the late Ellen Irene Magennis and
Henry James McElroy. He attended Newry Technical High School.. Harry served in the Irish Army for four years. After immigrating to the U. S. in 1957, was drafted into the Army but decided to join the U.S. Air Force instead.
He worked at Safeway Warehouse, Richmond, CA, first as a warehouseman and then advancing to Supervisor, for a total of 30 years. Following retirement, Harry decided to take on another career as a Charter Bus Driver with Laidlaw Bus Lines for 10 years.
Harry was passionate about family, golf, bocce, music, reading, social justice issues, and volunteering at Monument Crisis Center, Concord, and Shelter, Inc, Martinez. He loved going to the YMCA to work out and most of all to visit with his many friends. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Chapter 2035, Martinez.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Leona Wyffels McElroy of Martinez, CA, his children Sean (Gabby) of Martinez, and Neal (Gledellyn) of Stockton, four grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He is also survived by his brother Peter McElroy and sister Irene Cunningham of Northern Ireland, and brother Hugh McElroy of Delaware. He is predeceased by his brother Bernard and sisters Mary Gallagher and Helena McElroy.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Christ the King Catholic Church, Pleasant Hill, CA, Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 11 a.m.
