Dr. Howard F. Long, 86, a 52 year Pleasanton resident and family practice physician, died peacefully in his sleep June 20, 2013. He was born, Howard Franklin Rathbun, Jr. to Howard Franklin Rathbun Sr. and Rose Agnes Lott in Buffalo, NY, May 12, 1927. He grew up in Berkeley, CA and was adopted by his stepfather, Roy Long in 1934. He attended Oakland Technical High School and the University of California, Berkeley. He entered the Navy and UCSF Medical School in 1946. He transferred to the Air Force as a medical doctor with rank of Air Force Captain. In 1950 he opened his first private clinic in Dixon CA, then moved his clinic to Pleasanton in 1961 where he practiced on St. Mary St. for the last 52 years. He was involved in Pleasanton development and spearheaded low income housing for seniors such as Pleasanton Gardens, Pleasanton Greens and Pleasanton's downtown heritage theme. He built Longview Drive that runs from Foothill Road up Pleasanton Ridge, where he lived a number of years. He was an out-spoken board member of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness and the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons.

He is survived by his wife of fourteen years, Farideh (Tazayoni) Long, his brother David Arthur Long of Moraga, CA, his sons Andrew Byron Rathbone of Dixon, CA and Dr. Franklin Roy Long of Sacramento, CA and his daughters, Anita Marie Andre of Dixon, CA, Arleen Brenda Boyd of Honolulu, HI, Mona Lisa Ricard of Pleasant Hill, CA, Lana June Hurley of Prescott Valley, AZ, Eva Patricia Gonzales of Alameda, CA and his grandchildren Latonya Fuentes, Elise Ricard, Cathryn Ricard, Alexandra Anderson, and Joseph Ricard, and three great-grandchildren.
He is remembered for his dedication to serving his patients and community, his love of nature, hiking Pleasanton Ridge, hang glider design, medical device invention, singing, piano and guitar playing.
Friends and family are invited to his funeral service Friday, June 28, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First Street Pleasanton, CA 94566. He will be interned at the Sacramento Valley National Veteran's Cemetery 5810 Midway Rd, Dixon, CA on July 3, 2013 at 10:30 a.m.
