John Balmino Obituary
John "Johnny" James Balmino Dec. 2, 1921 - Apr. 23, 2013 Resident of Rodeo John James Balmino, born in Crockett, California to John and Teresa Balmino, passed away peacefully. A native Californian, John joined the U.S. Coast Guard at age 21. He spent four years in the service and was honorably discharged as a Motor Machinist's Mate First Class. He was assigned to LST 202, a landing craft, and was a part of Crew #36. He was proud of his service and fondly remembered his four years. A workaholic, he was advised by his doctors to undergo a major lifestyle change, which led to camping trips and a cabin in the woods and taking up golf. John became an avid golfer and his cabin in Grass Valley was a peaceful place that he loved to visit. John loved gardening and was known for his beautiful orchids. John was co-owner of Sugar City Bldg. Mat'l. Co. and devoted most of his life bringing it from a fledgling company to a well-known local concrete supplier. He did not like anyone to injure his "babies" (concrete trucks), especially the drivers! John leaves many to grieve, including his beloved wife of almost 63 years, Leona. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy, but leaves behind son Dave and his wife Dallas of Vallejo, CA; daughter Deborah and her husband Brian, of Grass Valley, CA; daughter Donna and her husband Jim, of Grass Valley, CA; and son-in-law Art Fanucchi of Petaluma, CA. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of loving family and friends. John was known for his hearty laugh, his gentleness and his generosity. John was truly loved by everyone he met. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass followed by a lunch reception at 10 am on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Rodeo.
