Marilyn Johnson
Feb. 9, 1924 - Jan. 26, 2014
Resident of Hayward
Marilyn Johnson (nee Mote) of Hayward died peacefully in her sleep at the Mercy Retirement and Care Center in Oakland on January 26, 2013. Born in Sioux City, Iowa on February 9, 1924, Marilyn graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in business, and subsequently moved to Denver, Colorado, where she met her late husband and love of her life, Homar "Johnny" Johnson. A resident of Hayward for nearly 65 years, Marilyn was retired from the California State University East Bay School of Business and Economics, and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Hayward, where she volunteered her time and talent to many church activities, and sang in the choir until suffering a stroke in 2002. She is survived by her sister, Jerrine Lucas of San Leandro, daughters Cynthia Brooks De Martini (Tom) of San Francisco and Lynne Elizabeth Kemp of Woodinville, Washington; and her beloved grandchildren Scott Brooks of Japan, and Christina and Christopher Kemp of Seattle, Washington. Marilyn loved the San Francisco Ballet and having a good laugh with family and friends. Until she was unable to do so, she continued to work on her crossword and acrostic puzzles each afternoon in order to keep her mind sharp. The family is also grateful for the love and kind devotion of her caregiver of ten years, Lola Fukua. No services will be held at the family's request. Donations may be made in Marilyn's name to the First United Church of Hayward, 1183 B Street, Hayward, CA 94541.
