She was born to Earl and Camilla Layng in Rockford, Illinois on May 11, 1925. She graduated high school from St. Teresa in Decatur, IL and went on to study at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She was married to the late CDR J. David Haithcock of Bennettsville, SC. Mary Ellen worked for over thirty years for the Contra Costa County Library. The library served her passion for reading, words, and the quest for information. She served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII, and her enthusiasm for travel began as a stewardess for American Airlines aboard a DC-3 during the 1940's. Mary Ellen was a devoted member of St. Isidore Catholic Church and was active in the Mothers' Club of St. Isidore School. She was a member of the KIWIS club for inactive stewardesses, served as a den mother for Cub Scouts, and was a loudly supportive little league mother. She loved San Francisco and spent much time there. She frequented the theatre, ballet and supported many faith based charities. She was an ideal travel partner whose curiosity took her throughout the U.S. and abroad. Mary Ellen showed immeasurable generosity and support to her family and friends, and helped many community members and friends during bouts of illness. She was a joy to visit with and loved to laugh. She was her high school's homecoming queen and ours too.
