Philip Luks
Nov 18, 1925 - Jan 3, 2014
Resident of Concord
Philip Luks passed away on Friday, January 3rd. He was a remarkable and memorable man, full of life, love, wisdom and fun. He fought a great fight against his illness (COPD) and strove for as long as he could to remain positive and keep strong. Philip was born on November 18, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA. He attended Harvard University until he enlisted in the Navy at the start of World War II. After his Navy service in the Philippines, he lived in Los Angeles, CA where his parents and sister had moved and completed his BA at UCLA. He worked as an electrician and union organizer in Los Angeles and Santa Cruz and later became a high school teacher in Santa Cruz and Berkeley. He performed with the Westwind International Folk Ensemble in Los Angeles and taught Greek dance through UC Extension in San Francisco and Berkeley. After moving to Concord, he was a substitute teacher and was The Original Ice Cream Man whose "good humor" truck traveled around the business and residential areas of Concord selling ice cream and sharing his extensive music collection with customers. His interests included his family and friends, playing bridge, gardening, enjoying music of all kinds, and telling jokes and stories. He is survived by his loving wife Linda, children Harry (of Burlingame) and Karen (of Chico) and grandchildren Adam (of Chico and Occidental College in Los Angeles), Lauren and Caroline (of Chico). Philip also leaves behind an extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is also survived by his dog Zoe, the last in a long line of dogs who were his beloved companions. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed and fondly remembered. A celebration of his life will be held on February 16th (email lindaluks@astound.net for details). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to .
