Richard LeRoy Powell, passed away suddenly, yet peacefully, in his sleep at his beloved cabin on November 26, 2013.
Dick is survived by his loving wife Jane, his children Dean and Teresa, sister Sharon, brother-in-law Gary, step-children, Kirt, Kathy and Patty, daughter-in-law Erika and sons-in-law Dave, Tom and Jim. He was an adoring grandfather to his 12 grandchildren: Gordon, Madelyn, Jeremy, Zachary, Brynn, Reed, Emma, Libby, Matthew, Evan, Piper and Kai. He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara and parents Freeland and Viola.
Born in Grand Island, NE and raised in Burbank, CA, he was a 43-year resident of Concord, CA. A high school graduate of John Burroughs in Burbank, he also earned college degrees from Glendale College and UCLA and an MBA from Saint Mary's College of California. He is also a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America. He proudly served in the United States Army and is a Vietnam Veteran. He was a chemist by profession.
He retired in 2004 from Sherwin-Williams Company as Technical Director of Emeryville California Coatings Development Laboratory after a 42-year career. In addition, he held sales and technical rep positions. He was actively involved in many professional organizations and societies.
A lifelong learner, he enjoyed many hobbies and interests: photography, SCUBA diving, men's Bible study, gardening, bocce and traveling the world. He was in the process of publishing a botanical book on Protea. He loved sharing his hobbies with his grandchildren and exposing them to new experiences. He particularly enjoyed sharing his love of Kauai with them.
Family and friends will genuinely miss Dick. He touched many lives in such a positive way.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 8, 2013, from 2-4 pm at Ouimet Bros., 4125 Clayton Road, Concord. You are invited to attend a Celebration of Life service Monday, December 9, 2013, at 2pm at Saint Matthew Lutheran Church, 399 Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick's memory may be made to Lutheran World Relief, or .
