Robert David Costello Obituary
Robert David Costello
Oct 5,1927-April 4,2014
Resident of Walnut Creek
Our beloved 'Papa' passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday April 4, 2014. He was a brilliant and generous man, who loved his family and his faith above all. Bob was born and raised in San Francisco before he joined the Army Air Force in 1945, and served as a cryptographer in Alaska. After his military service, he attended the University of California Berkeley, where he graduated in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduation, he started work at Shell Oil Refinery in Martinez, where he retired from in 1989.
The love of Bob's life was his wife June, who preceded him in death in 1991. Bob and June were lifelong 49ers fans and had season tickets for many years. Bob valued education and the arts, especially the Symphony and Opera. He was a lifelong learner, taking courses and studying up until the end. He actively fostered this appreciation in his daughter and four grandchildren. Bob was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his daughter Christine (Borre) Ulrichsen; grandchildren Christian, Anette, Ingrid and Eva Ulrichsen as well as his sister Vera O'Donnell; nephew Bud (Sue); and nieces Sr. Joan, Marilyn (Max) and Diane. He will be sorely missed. The family would especially like to thank Joanne Mogadam and her team of caregivers, Barbara Sandoval, Bob's 'personal manager', and Martha Gonzalez de Contreras, dear family friend, for all their loving care and support.
A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 1650 Ygnacio Valley Rd, Walnut Creek on Monday April 14, 2014 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Golden Gate National Cemetery at 1:00 PM.
