Roland A. Bartolomei, 87, of Martinez, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2013 with his wife Virginia and family by his side. He was born to the late Louis and Helen Bartolomei, September 22, 1926, in Martinez. Roland graduated from Alhambra Union High School in 1944 then served in the US Navy for the remainder of World War II. He married Virginia Noia in 1962, where they made Martinez their home together for the next 51 years. Roland worked for Contra Costa County where he was a member of the Public Works Road Crew working alongside his uncle and cousin during his 36 year career. With his keen wisdom, jokes and smile, he would always be surrounded by his family, friends and neighbors. In addition, each year he would always be found helping with the family vineyard located in the Vine Hill area of Martinez. Roland was a member of St. Catherine's Church and the Martinez Sportsman Club along with other service clubs and organizations. During the season, he brought a true meaning to the phrase "Forty-Niner Faithful" and was a big fan of the San Francisco Giants. He enjoyed music and was an accomplished athlete. He played softball in local City leagues along with playing football in the County leagues. He and his wife Virginia, enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing and hunting with all his cousins and friends. He was an avid shuffleboard player and won a number of awards throughout Martinez. On any given night, you would find Roland playing in tournaments at venues such as the Rex Club, Della Pipa's or the Hub Club. Roland is survived by his wife Virginia, Brother-in-Law Robert (Judy) and Sister-in-Law (Anne). He also left loving nieces, nephews and God children. He is preceded in death by his sister, Betty Ochoa and brother-in-law, George Noia. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the Hospice Foundation of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Avenue, Pleasant Hill, Ca. 94523. The service will be held at St. Catherine's of Sienna Church for all of his family and friends on Thursday, November 7th at 10:00 AM with graveside blessings to follow at The Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1965 Reliez Valley Rd, Lafayette, Ca.
