Vivian Ann Patterson
Vivian Ann Wilson was born on June 28, 1933 in Evarts, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Coye Wilson, Fanny Middleton and her step-father, John B. Lowe. Vivian passed away peacefully on January 7th, 2013 in Oakland, California.
Vivian grew up in Evarts, Kentucky and graduated from Evarts High School in 1950. She attended Eastern Kentucky State University in Richmond, Kentucky. She graduated from Bowling Green State University, Ohio with a B.A. in Education. Vivian received her Masters of Arts degree in Education from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. She possessed a California State Board of Education Life Diploma and Post Graduate Special Education Teaching credentials in Reading, Learning Disabilities, Pupil Personnel Services and Resource Development.
Vivian loved kids and taught school for approximately 42 years in Ohio, Indiana, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the Department of Defense Schools with the US Navy in the Philippines and Yokohama, Japan, Imperial Beach,
California, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Vivian was a lifelong scholar from a family of educators. She worked with the San Ramon Valley Unified School District for 21 years and also taught at Baldwin and Montevideo Elementary Schools. In 1985, she was selected as a mentor teacher for Staff Development. She also started two Teacher Book Clubs and was a member of the English Language Arts Task Force as well as being an active member of the California Teachers Association.
Vivian was a bright presence for many organizations: American Association of University Women, P.E.O., Democratic Club, and Harbor Bay Club. She loved travel, bridge, attending art and museum exhibits, music concerts, Common Wealth Club, and International Affairs discussions.
Vivian is survived by her beloved husband, Don Patterson. They were married in Coronado, California in 1964. She is also survived by their loving son, John "Tony" Patterson and her daughter-in-law, Ann Robinson.
Memorial services were held Sunday, January 13th, 2013, at the Congregational Church in Alameda, California at 3:30 PM.
