SMITH, Gilbert Elmer
June 7, 1941 - May 30, 2014
On Friday, May 30, 2014, Gil "Smitty" Smith suddenly lost his valiant battle with lung cancer, at the age of 73. He passed away as he lived, surrounded by loved ones. He will be sadly missed by all his friends and family, including his wife of 8 years Linda, his brother Norman (Shirley), his sister Esther (Terry), his children, Grant (Kim), Lianne (Jeff), Lauren (Sean), his stepchildren, Shanda (Tom), Renee (Steven) and Steve as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and many good friends. Gil was predeceased by his parents Elmer and Beatrice, his second wife Patricia, his brothers, Cameron, Jerry, Jack and sister Dorothy.
Throughout his life Gil worked hard joining the Air Force in 1958 and serving for 30 years. He worked at Woodwards, later at Spar, and finally for Enterprise. But he liked to play even harder! Gil always kept busy playing Golf, starting the RagTags Ball Team, being a part of the IOOB, and Legion, and enjoyed time at the lake lot. He made lifelong friends wherever he went. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his happiest moments were with his family and friends around him.
A Celebration of Gil's Life will be held on Friday, June 6, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton where a Reception will follow.
His family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at the Royal Alex Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
