SYKES, Leonard Frank
June 10, 1922 - January 29, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard Frank Sykes, at the age of 91 on January 29, 2014.
He was born June 10, 1922 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. Len, a proud veteran, fought in WWII as an RCAF Pilot in Squadron 603. While piloting his Beaufighter aircraft over the Mediterranean Sea, he was shot down, rescued and escaped to safety. Upon returning to England, he married Jean, the love of his life, on January 29, 1945. Coincidentally Len passed away on what would have been their 69th Wedding Anniversary. Len was employed with Canada Post until his retirement at age 56. He was a proud member of the Stony Plain Legion. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him for his warm, humorous, and caring personality. He was a man of strong character, a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, brother and a faithful friend to many.
Len leaves to cherish his memory, his children Ray Sykes (Anita), Merv Sykes (Fatima), Maureen Bianchini (Russ), and Brenda Fil (Dan); grandchildren Leah, Marianne (Aster), Dayna, Kevin (Jenn), Jeff (Nicole), Chrisey (Marvin), and Liam; great-grandchildren Cadence, Kyan, Tristan, William, Aria and Cason. Also survived by his sister Shirley Sparks; sister-in-law Mary Sykes; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife Jean Sykes (June 2013); brother Fred Sykes; brother-in-law Harold Sparks; grandson Tao; and great-grandson Ashton.
