HAYDEN, Dr. Ruth
Helen Mary Ruth Hayden, PhD, passed away peacefully July 20, 2013 with her family by her side, at Agape Hospice in Calgary.
Ruth was born in Longford, Ireland, June 17, 1935 to James O'Sullivan and Maureen O'Loghlen, always, Dada and Mama. Ruth is also embraced in heaven by her son Kieran, her brothers Donal and Rev. Fr. Laurence and her sister Barbara. Her loving husband Mac of 52 years, her son Damian (Jeanne), her daughter Alix (Marcus), her brother Eugene (Ellen), and her sister Virginia (Tony) survive her. Ruth so loved children, and none more than her grandchildren Mairin, Claire, Colm, Jake and Senan.
Following O'Sullivan tradition, Ruth had a long and distinguished career as an educator, in schools and in service to community: as elementary school teacher in Montreal, Yellowknife, and Sherwood Park; as chairperson of Sherwood Park Catholic School District; as professor of elementary education at the University of Alberta, and as a researcher renown in the field of family literacy (Ruth is a recipient of the Lois Hole Community Leadership Award).
Ruth was by any of her student's account, a wonderful and witty teacher, and was just as wise in her daily work and devotion as mother, wife and grandmother. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke's Catholic Church (corner of Northmount Drive and Northland Drive N.W., Calgary) on Friday, July 26, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. David Meadows, Presider.
Ruth was especially grateful for the compassionate, professional care she received at Agape and from Calgary's palliative care nurses.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that new children's books be brought to the funeral service, which will be donated to CanLearn Society. Suggestions for titles may be found at bit.ly/1332uvu. Donations to help educate young Albertans may be made to The Kieran Hayden Memorial Mechanical Engineering Award Fund at The University of Alberta, (Office of the Registrar, 120 Administration Building, Edmonton, AB T6G 2M7; website: www.registrar.ualberta.ca.)
