JOHN DORRIS

Obituary Condolences

John W. Dorris, formerly of El Paso, died peacefully Saturday, November 3, 2012 in Lubbock, Texas. John was born on February 26, 1936 to J. Ray and Grace Dorris (deceased). He grew up in Dallas, Texas, where he graduated from Sunset High School. After a brief stint at the University of Texas, he received his bachelor?s degree from North Texas State College in Denton, Texas, where he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. During his junior year, he met Barbara Barnard. He quickly knew that she was the best thing that ever happened to him, and they married on March 21, 1958. In 1964, the family moved to El Paso where John and Barbara resided until 2011. A computer programmer, John first worked for Burroughs before beginning his career with El Paso National Bank. During his time with El Paso National, John worked his way up from a computer specialist to Senior Vice President and Cashier. Also during this tenure, he volunteered for the City of El Paso and received numerous awards and recognition such as the Key to the City and an honorary appointment as ?Admiral? in the El Paso Navy. Away from work, John was an avid golfer. A member of the El Paso Country Club, he spent as much time as possible on the course or involved in a friendly game of Chilo afterwards. He was notorious for his competitiveness and his wry sense of humor. John is survived by his wife Barbara, his mother-in-law Mary Barnard, and his daughter Shari Flynn all of Lubbock, his daughter Tracy Smith of Dallas, his grandchildren Corey (Kami) Nichols, Kim Smith, and Kyle (Margie) Nichols and his sister, Linda (Bill) Strassburger of Fort Worth. A private memorial service was held in Lubbock to celebrate his life.
