Local Artist Adelle M. DeWalt, age 81 of Erie, died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 following a short illness with leukemia. She was born on December 10, 1931 in Marion, Ind., a daughter of the late George and Adeline Hirsch Andrews. Adelle was a 1950 graduate of Marion High School, and Columbia College in Missouri. She also received her B.S. from Indiana University, Bloomington with a minor in Modern Dance. She had been a PhysEd substitute teacher in elementary schools, and was a volunteer at the Presque Isle Nature Hut. Adelle was a member of the YWCA and enjoyed synchronized swimming. She was Swimmer of the Year, 1981-82 & 1983-84 at the YMCA. Adelle attended many classes with friends, taught belly dancing, and in 1997-98, received the Volunteer Award for Water Safety Instructor at Strong Vincent High School. She also studied art in Erie under Joseph Plavcan, receiving many awards, and in 1990 showed "Sketches and Drawings from Chestnut Street", at the Bayfront Gallery, 319 Chestnut St. She was also a member of the A.A.U.W. poetry group and was past president of the Women's Club of Erie. Adelle enjoyed traveling, sailing, canoeing, cycling and recently caring for her great grandchildren Zachary and Connor Greco. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Janet L. in 1980. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Ronald DeWalt; three sons: Paul DeWalt and his wife Mary Ann, James DeWalt, and John DeWalt and his wife Lisa; grandchildren: Daniella, Tim, David, Ian, Daniel, Aaron, and Amanda Greco and her husband Jeffery, and a sister Barbara Foust, Marion, Ind.
