Barbara Jane (Harvey) French went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 19, 2013. She was born April 10, 1927 to Frank Octavius Harvey and Ruth Ford Harvey in Wayne Township, Erie County, Pa.
She was preceded in death by three brothers: Ford, Lloyd and Kenneth Harvey and one sister, Shirley Dougherty. She is survived by three daughters: Deborah Sheesley of Perkasie, Pa., Rebecca Handyside of Gurnee, Ill., and Shirley Ruth French of Erie, Pa.; Three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren also survive her.
Barbara graduated from Corry Area High in 1944; Houghton College in Religious Education in 1948, and earned a Master's degree in Elementary Education at the State of New York University
at Fredonia. She was married to her late husband, Alvin Eugene French MD. in 1949. In 1955, she and her husband, and the two oldest daughters, resided in London, England, where Alvin studied tropical medicine. The French's resided in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where Alvin served as a medical missionary, and their youngest daughter was born. They served in Africa from 1956-1959. Barbara was employed as a third grade teacher in the Corry Area School District from 1964-1993. Barbara was an avid gardener of indoor and outdoor plants, and enjoyed cross stitch embroidery. She dedicated the best years of her retirement to advocacy for the mentally ill. Her favorite book of the Bible was I John.
Calling hours and a memorial service will be held at the Corry Evangelical United Methodist Church, and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Corry Evangelical United Methodist Church and the Client Assistance Fund at Stairways Behavioral Health or NAMI of Erie County, Pa.
