Clair D. Mattocks, 88, of Girard, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Pleasant Ridge Manor.
Clair was born May 24, 1925 in Guys Mills, Pa., a son of the late Wallace and Mildred Kightlinger Mattocks.
He entered the U.S. Army
in 1943, and served during WWII
. While in battle he served in the South Philippines Liberation and Western Pacific. He received the Bronze Arrowhead, the WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars
, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal, before he was discharged in 1946. Clair then moved to Guys Mills and Saegertown area, where he resided for many years. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for SJ Groves where he worked on major construction sites throughout Pennsylvania, on Interstate 80 and the Pittsburgh Airport.
Clair was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He enjoyed hunting, wood carving and traveling to Wauchula, Florida, where he spent many winters.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his half sister, Marjorie McHenry; and half brother, Charles Mattocks.
Clair will be deeply missed by his three daughters, Marsha Diane Merski of Lake City, Sara Jane Ferguson and her husband, John of Blooming Valley, Pa., and Deborah Malcom; his son, Rick Mattocks of Saegertown, Pa.; half sisters, Elsie Hours, Evelyn Gosnell, and Kathryn Rutter; half brother, Raymond Mattocks; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call on Wednesday from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. at the Edder Funeral Home, Inc., 309 Main St. East, Girard. Committal and military honors will follow at Venango Cemetery.
