David Beck, age 79, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, surrounded by his loving family at home. He was born in Erie on July 22, 1932 and was raised by his maternal grandparents, Dr. Frank and Mabel Beck. He graduated from East High School and from Gannon University and served for two years in the U.S. Army. David took pride in his 37 years of work as an underwriter and assistant to the chairman at Erie Insurance. There, he met his wife of 47 years, Betty Pyle Humberston. Together with their five children, they enjoyed their faithful church life, sailing, canoeing, travel, antiquing, and visiting art and history museums. An avid volunteer all his life, David devoted many hours to the Veterans Hospital, Erie First Assembly of God, the Erie Philharmonic, and the Flagship Niagara League. He greatly enjoyed visiting the Chautauqua Institute and the Erie Zoo and was for years a member of the Erie Yacht Club. His interests included collecting wooden primitives and antique clocks; making wooden cars and toys; and studying cathedrals, covered bridges, American and European history, tall ships, and many other subjects. Survivors include his wife Betty; daughter Bonnie Chernicky and her husband Chuck of Erie; daughter Sherie Abbey and her husband Jay of Miami, Fla.; Amy Beck Danusiar and her husband Chris of Wheaton, Ill.; Jennifer Beck and her husband Steve Ferruci of Thompson, Conn.; and daughter-in-law Connie Humberston of Shillington, Pa. He was predeceased by his son, Burt Edward Humberston, and his infant daughter, Marie Beck. David was the adoring grandfather of Nathan, Benjamin, Joshua, Ellen, and Noah Humberston, Julia and Erek Chernicky, Anna, Madeleine, and Isabella Danusiar, and Elsabet and Zachariah Ferruci. David is also survived by his sister Ruth Beck Bean, fifteen nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends Ray Bianchi, Dan Burt and Fred Sipple.
