David E. Groenendaal, 86, of East Lackawannock Township, Pa., passed away peacefully Friday June, 6, 2014, at 1:20 a.m., in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township, Pa. David was born April 15, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Charles and Wilhemina Benoit Groenendaal.

David and his wife were the co-owners and operators of the former Belle Valley Provision of Erie, Pa. He also worked for the former Eazor Trucking of West Middlesex, as a truck driver, and then was a self employed truck driver until he retired in 1990. David was a Merchant Marine from 1941 to 1947. In 2006, David received Commemorative Medal from the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, on the 60th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 (WWII), for his efforts in the war for freedom. He was of the Pentecostal faith. David was a 32 degree Mason, where he formerly belonged to a Lodge in Erie. He enjoyed woodworking, listening to old country music, singing hymns, and especially listening to his twin grandsons', Austin and Clayton, West Middlesex Varsity Football games.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Markow Groenendaal whom he married May 3, 1950; a daughter, Debbie Lomonte of Reynolds, Pa.; three sons, Mark Groenendaal and his wife Janet Korab of E. Lackawannock Township, Pa., David Groenendaal and his wife Christy Dillen of North East, Pa., and Charlie Groenendaal of West Field, N.Y.; two sisters, Lois Ward of Erie, Pa., and Ruthie Faulk and her husband Richard of Erie, Pa.; two brothers, Robert Groenendaal of Erie, Pa., and Austie Groenendaal of Florida; six grandchildren, twins Clayton and Austin, Angelo, Matt, Herb, Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Angelo "Buppy," Nico, and Sydney.

David was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Pauline Johnson; a brother Edward Groenendaal; and a grandson Marine Corp Staff Sergeant Eric Groenendaal.

In keeping with David's wishes, there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to the American , or to the donor's local Veteran's Administration.
