Dorothy Jean Keys Lockett, of 3614 Roma Drive, Erie, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at her residence, after an extended illness, surrounded by family. She was the daughter of the late Etta Keys and Leslie J. Smith.
She was a lifelong resident of the city of Erie. Dorothy graduated from Academy High, Erie Business Center and Mercyhurt College. She began a life long business career working for OIC, and worked as a administrative secretary for Mr. H.O. Hirt, of Erie Insurance Exchange. She then began a thirty year career at Booker T. Washington Center, finishing off as the first woman to be appointed Executive Director of the center. After retirement from BTW, Dorothy began a second career as a librarian for Erie County Blasco Library. In her spare time, she loved hunting, fishing, and annual camping with the ladies from Blasco Library.
She was a former member of Family Worship Center, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, and Second Baptist Church, where she was active in several different ministries.
Dorothy was a member of the NAACP, Rotary Club
, Gem City Lodge 328, and a member of the Erie Historical Society.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her uncle the late Rev. Perry Keys Sr.
She is survived by the father of her children Jesse D. Lockett; two daughters, Monique Lockett, Danielle Saunders and two sons, Jesse Jr. and Marc Lockett, all of Erie, six grandchildren, David, Kyle and Timothy Lockett, Sylvia Cooley, Nigel and Jareea Saunders as well as six great-grandchildren.
The Lockett family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Regional Home Health Hospice.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Second Baptist Church, 757 East 26th Street, with a Funeral Service there on Friday, May 16, 2014, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Rev. Dr. Allen B. Green eulogizing. Funeral Services are provided by Law Funeral Home, 2926 Pine Ave., Erie.
