Ernest E. "Ernie" Johnson, age 90 of Erie, passed away Monday, May 28, 2012 at Sunrise Assisted Living at Presque Isle Bay. He was born in Erie on September 3, 1921 the son of the late Ernest and Louise Lichtenwalter Johnson. He graduated from the former Academy High School in June, 1939. Ernie was employed with the General Electric Co. until he enlisted with the U.S. Army in June, 1942. He retired from the General Telephone Company after 35 years of service. He retired as the construction manager of the outside plant. During his Army service, he saw action in North Africa, Italy, the Philippines and Japan. He attained the rank of Sergeant, having campaign ribbons with four Bronze Stars and other awards. Ernie lived in Spring Hill, Florida for nineteen years before moving back to Erie in 1999. He was a life member of the Siebenbuerger Club and a life member of the V.F.W. Post #1029 in Spring Hill, a life member of Elks Lodge 2582 in Brooksville, Florida and Lodge 67 in Erie. Ernie was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Erie and a charter member of Nativity Lutheran Church in Weeki Wachee, Florida. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret "Peg" Puskus Johnson, who has been waiting for him since June 11, 2002; his sisters, Gertrude and Esther and his brothers, Richard and Raymond, along with his brother in law Cy and his sister in law, Jean. Survivors include his sister, Alice Mintz of Sarasota, Florida; brother, Kenneth Johnson (Dorothy) of Millcreek Twp; a brother in law, Andrew Puskus of Erie and several nieces and nephews, especially JoAnn Puskus, whom he always thought of as his "daughter". His final act of affection was touching his heart and uttering to her, "You are my baby." Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 4216 Sterrettania Rd. on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a Funeral Service there on Thursday at 12 Noon, conducted by Rev. Roy P. Washill, Interim Pastor of St. John Lutheran Church. Entombment, Holy Family Mausoleum at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, with military honors, conducted by V.F.W. Post #470. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Sunrise Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to St. John Lutheran Church, 2216 Peach St., Erie, PA 16502 or St. Stephen of Hungary R.C.
