Frank J. Rawhide Bohun Obituary

Frank J. "Rawhide" Bohun, aka Uncle Frank, age 98, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the UPMC Hamot. He resided in Erie. He was born in Beleaira, Ohio on April 2, 1915, son of the late Vincent and Theresa Vrablec Bohun.

Frank is survived by a brother Edward Bohun and his wife Viola of Gilbert, Ariz., along with several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers: Louis, Steve, Alex and Anthony Bohun, two sisters Ann Przepierski and Mary A. Polon, who passed away Monday morning, February 17, 2014. He was also preceded in death by three infant sisters Rose, Theresa and Helen Bohun.

He was a longtime member of Holy Family R. C. Church. Frank retired from the Erie General Electric, in 1975, after 35 years of service. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club, a Life Member of the Huzar Club, the Slovak Sokol and a member of the American Legion Post 771. Frank served with the 25th Infantry Division "Tropic Lightening," in the Pacific Theater of Operations, during World War II. He was a jungle fighter seeing action on Guadalcanal and in the Philippines. He was an outstanding athlete reigning Four times as a World Horseshoes Champion and 16 times as a Pennsylvania Horseshoes Champion. He also played in the National YMCA Basketball Championships. Frank is in three Hall of Fames: The Metro PA State Horseshoe Hall of Fame, the YMCA Basketball Hall of Fame, in Springfield, Mass., for his foul shooting, and the National Horseshoe Hall of Fame, in Springfield, Ill. He was selected as one of the Times-News 100 athletes of the 20th Century and voted as the 2005 Pennsylvania Senior Athlete. Frank loved Polkas and was a good ballroom dancer.

Friends may call at the Mark G. Razanauskas Funeral Home, 701 East Avenue, Erie, Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., where a prayer service will be conducted Saturday morning at 10:30, followed by a Funeral Mass at Holy Family Church at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery.
