Henry Edward Carpenter, 89, of Erie, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2014 at St. Mary's Home of Erie East. He was born in Erie July 21, 1924, son of the late Joseph and Pearl Walczak Karpinski. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He participated in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe.

He received the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars. After retiring from Smith Meters of Erie, Hank became a long time volunteer at the Soldiers and Sailors Home. He enjoyed walking, bowling, dancing, and spending time with family. He is survived by four daughters, Helen, Joyce, Carolyn, and Marlene; and a son. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Private services with inurnment in the Columbarium at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Soldiers & Sailors Home Activity Fund, 560 East 3rd St., Erie, PA 16507.
