Jay D. Buchanan, age 92, of Erie, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014 at St. Vincent Hospital. Born September 19, 1921 in Erie, he was the son of the late Frank and Maude (Wells) Buchanan.

He graduated from East High School in 1939. He was a sergeant in the Marine Air Corps during World War II and received a Purple Heart for his valor. Jay then graduated from Gannon College and earned his Master's Degree in Political Science from Georgetown University in 1948. Later he received a Masters Degree in Counseling from Edinboro College. He was a history teacher and counselor for many years in the Erie School District at Academy High School until his retirement in 1986. He was honored with an award as one of Gannon University's first Distinguished Alumni.

Jay was a longtime parishioner, usher, and lector at Holy Rosary Church. In later years he belonged to St. Jude the Apostle Church. He was a life member of the South Erie Turners, East Erie Turners, Elks Lodge 67, and the Zukor Club. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles and chocolate covered cherries. "Grandpa Bus", as he was known by his family, will long be remembered for his gentle spirit, constant smile, and devotion to his family. He most enjoyed spending time with family and never missed family events or parties.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jean E. (Nash) Buchanan in 2010; a sister, Violet Maas; a brother, Francis Buchanan; a son-in-law, Dominick Bonitatibus; and a grandson, Jon Gasperi.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia "Patty" (Schlosser) Bonitatibus and Mary Jo Steiner, husband Bradley; a son, Michael Buchanan, wife Lavaughn, all of Erie; two sisters, Doris Munger, of Erie and Beverly Gervasi, husband Jock, of The Villages, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Amy Jones, husband Jeff, Kara Shubert, Kevin Schlosser, wife Renee, Holly Gasperi, Jason Steiner, wife Debra, John Steiner, wife Erin, Jennifer Roose, husband Dave, Jill Brugger, husband Austin, and Jessica Frailey, husband Jeff; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Monday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th St. at Greengarden Boulevard. Services will be held there on Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Jude the Apostle Church at 9:30 a.m. with Fr. Michael Ferrick, celebrant. Burial at Trinity Cemetery.
