Jean S. Penman, age 89, formerly of Lawrence Park, residing at St. Mary's at Asbury Ridge, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013. She was born in Erie on September 11, 1924, daughter of the late Herman and Anna Schanbacher.

Jean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, a Past Matron of Erie Chapter #21 O.E.S., and a member of Shiloh Chapter #153 O.E.S. She was a former District Deputy of District 1A, Order of the Eastern Star and past Mother Advisor of Erie Assembly #8, Order of the Rainbow for Girls. Jean was also a member of and former state treasurer to the retired State Police of PA Association Auxiliary, and a former member of the Lawrence Park Garden Club. She and her husband enjoyed camping and were members of several local camping clubs. Jean was an avid bridge and solitaire player, and enjoyed her time playing cards with her friends at St. Mary's Home.

Jean was a graduate of Mercyhurst College and received her M.Ed from Penn State University. She taught at Brocton, N.Y., Penn State Main Campus, and Lawrence Park High School. She then worked as a secretary for Lawrence Park Township until her retirement.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis P. Penman; and one brother, William G. Schanbacher. She is survived by one daughter, Susan Penman Decker and her husband, Dr. Richard Decker; Dr. Andreas Philippakis and his family; two grandchildren, Christopher and Michelle Decker; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home, 4216 Sterrettania Road on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to attend a funeral service at First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 250 West 7th Street, on Thursday at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. Stephen Morse. Shiloh Chapter #153, O.E.S. will conduct a service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Interment, Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
