Manuel Paul "Mandy" Nunes , age 92, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4 , 2014 in Pinehurst, N.C., surrounded by family. He was born July 23, 1921, in Erie, the son of late Manuel P. Nunes, Sr. and Maria (Mary) Maderios Nunes, who immigrated here from Lisbon, Portugal.

Manuel was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, who fought in five major battles in Europe, including Battle of the Bulge, and was a Purple Heart recipient for his wounds. He was an avid sports fan. He played and coached baseball, softball and little league. His hobbies included bowling, hunting, traveling, spending time with family and his beloved little dog, Mollie. Manuel was a member of the VFW post, the American Legion , and several others. He was a retired foreman from the Ruberoid Company (GAF).

Manuel was preceded in death by his wife, June Macey Manross Nunes, to whom he was married for 65 years; his brothers, Anthony Nunes, Manuel S. Nunes; his sisters, Frances Glendore, Emily Riberio, Mae Mello, Mary Facchiano, Evelyn Gostomski and Florence Dowd.

He is survived by his four daughters, Judy Marino of Erie, Cheryl (James) Benim of High Point, N.C., Karen (Patrick) Feron of Pinehurst, N.C., Kimberly Nunes of Tampa, Florida, and one son, Timothy Nunes of Hilton Head, S.C. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Chris Campanelli and Destiny Carter of Erie, Lisa Rodebaugh of Greenville, N.C., James Benim, Jr. of Erie, Shari Caviness of High Point, N.C., Adam Benim of Greensboro, N.C., Amber Buser of Butler, Pa., Troy Nunes of Gibsonia, Pa., Todd Ferrare, Mark Ferrare and Nicole Ferrare, all of Tampa, Fla., and his great-grandchildren, Abby and Kevin Rodebaugh, Bethany Martin, Nathan and Natalie Benim, Dominic Selcer, Anthony Campanelli, Lexie Lamana, McCale and Larimie Buser, Tavian, Beyla and Lidah Nunes, Victoria, Aslyn, Todd Jr., Kimberlee, Emma, Mykai and Macie Ferrare.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 p.m., at the Dusckas Funeral Home, 536 West 10th Street, and are invited to attend a prayer service there on Monday at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 1617 Walnut Street. Father Alex Amico will officiate. Full military honors will follow at Erie Cemetery, conducted by American Legion Carl Neff Post 571. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 3415, Erie, PA 16508, or Pennsylvania Soldiers' and Sailors' Home, 560 East 3rd St., Erie, PA 16507.
