Maurice (Smokey) McGill Jr., age 58, of Harborcreek and formerly of North East, died Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at The Cleveland Clinic, lovingly surrounded by his family.
He was born on October 2, 1954 in Erie to the late Maurice and Rosalie Donney McGill. Maurice graduated from North East High School in 1972 and attended Grand River Academy Prep School and Edinboro University. He went on to earn an Associate Degree in Letters, Arts, and Sciences and a B.A. in Communication from Penn State Behrend in 1988. Later, to complement his professional work, Maurice completed an extensive Dealership Manager's Training Program in Washington, D.C.
While working towards his degree, Maurice worked at Hammermill Paper Company. Later, he was employed at Five Star International, Inc. as a Fleet Truck Sales Representative and General Manager. There, he cultivated many lasting friendships with his customers.
Maurice was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church, East Erie Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus, Siebenbuerger Club, Sons of Lake Erie, and Penn State Alumni Association. He was a past Special Olympics
bowling coach and chaperone.
Maurice was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, skiing, boating, and beach walks. He especially enjoyed spending time with his son, Brady and his wife, Lark, both of whom he cherished.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lark Aglio McGill, whom he married on December 23, 1989; and his son, Brady McGill; sisters, Anne McGill-Franzen and husband, Richard Allington of Knoxville, Tenn., Maureen McGill and husband, David Ornstein of Albany, N.Y., Theresa Wishart and husband, William of Knoxville, Tenn., Patricia McGill and husband, David Sleppy of Atlanta, Ga., Margaret Fiorenzo and husband, Thomas of Atlanta, Ga., Celine McGill and husband, Brian Brumley of Charleston, S.C.; brothers, William McGill and wife, Ellen of Erie, Jerome McGill and wife, Nancy Barrette of Farmington Hills, Mich., Gregory McGill of Atlanta, Ga., Dennis McGill and wife, Lynn of Findley Lake, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Mildred (Bootsie) Delinski, Judy Smith, Angela Tillman and husband, Larry; close friend, Toots Trevino of Midland, Pa.; many nieces and nephews and his loyal canine companion, Coco-Puff. Maurice was preceded in death by his parents and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Aglio.
Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Thursday from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. On Friday friends are invited to join the family for a prayer service at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. from Our Lady of Mercy Church. Interment at Saint Gregory Cemetery will follow immediately after Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady of Mercy Church, 837 Bartlett Road, Harborcreek, PA 16421.
