Michael L. Sweeney, Sr., age 69, of Erie, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 following a lengthy illness. He was born on December 19, 1943 in Erie, son of the late Daniel F. and Elizabeth S. Coake Sweeney. He had resided in Sheffield, Pa. for 20 years, returning to Erie in 2011.
Mike was a U.S. Navy
veteran. He had served as a police officer
with the City of Erie Police Dept. for 26 years prior to retirement. Following retirement from the police force, he was employed by United Refining Co. from where he also subsequently retired. Mike was a member of the Erie Police Officers Retiree Assn., Sheffield Rod & Gun Club, VFW
Post #8755 in Sheffield, and American Legion East Erie Post #771. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and boating.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Snyder Sweeney. Survivors include his fiancee', Debra Yochim; three sons, Michael L., Jr., Sean and Jefferey Sweeney; one daughter, Shelby Sweeney; four stepchildren, Anita, Joseph, Mark and Christopher Bonamino; three brothers, Daniel J. and Joseph Sweeney and Donald D. Way; two grandchildren, Karly and Michael J. Sweeney.
Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Road, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. During the calling hours, Erie Retired Police Officers Association will meet at the funeral home for a brief memorial service at 3 p.m. and American Legion Carl Neff Post #571 will conduct a military service there at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American
