Paul G. Rovnak, age 87, of Lake Placid, Florida, and formerly of Erie, passed away at his residence Monday, September 9, 2013. Born June 22, 1926 in Erie he was the son of the late Paul J. and Pauline (Tomko) Rovnak.
Paul was a highly decorated veteran of the United States Army
serving during World War II
. He was awarded the Purple Heart
and 3 Bronze Stars
for his service. He worked as the manager of the maintenance department at Hamermill Paper Company for 38 years until his retirement.
Paul was a longtime member of St. George Church, the Elks Club, the American Legion- Carl Neff Post, and a lifetime member of the East Erie Turners. He enjoyed golf and traveling, and will be remembered as a man who was extremely handy and could fix anything.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Juliana Walczak and Marie Rovnak; a brother, John "Jack" Rovnak and a grandson, Joshua Rovnak.
Survivors include his loving wife of almost 65 years, Dawn (Caldwell) Rovnak whom he married on September 18, 1948; five children, Paul Rovnak, wife Cyndi, of Longmont, Colo.; Lou Ann Karle, husband Michael, of Erie, Matthew Rovnak, wife Roberta, of Clearwater, Minn., Daniel Rovnak, wife Rose, of Berthoud, Colo., and Joel Rovnak, wife Sandra, of Fort Collins, Colo; a brother, Joseph Rovnak of Erie; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call on Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard and are invited to attend a Funeral Mass Friday at St. George Church at 10:30 a.m.. Entombment will follow at Holy Family Mausoleum in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
