Reinelda E. Vickey Obituary
Reinelda E. Vickey, 96, of Oceanside, California, died peacefully during the early morning hours of December 27, 2012. Born on July 22, 1916 in Erie, Pennsylvania, "Rennie" dedicated her life to the service of her country. After graduating from Hamot Hospital School of Nursing in 1939 and spending time there as an operating room nurse, Rennie enlisted in the U.S. Navy and began her tenure in the Navy Nurse Corps in 1942. She took a brief respite from active duty to get her degree in Nursing Education from the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1951. Her distinguished career took her to many places, from the Naval Hospitals in Philadelphia, Pa., Jacksonville, Fla., New London, Conn. and Colon, Panama to a convalescent hospital in Lake Worth, Fla. to a tour of duty on the USS Haven during the Korean War. Upon her retirement from the Navy, Rennie settled in Oceanside, Calif. to be near Camp Pendleton and many of her military friends. She was an avid salmon fisherman, award winning artist and a collector of seahorses. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Vickey, brother, Frederick J. Vickey of N. J., and sister, Naomi Nuber of Erie, Pa. She is survived by nephews, Frederick A. Vickey of Erie, Pa. and Mark Carson of Atlanta, Ga., niece, Geraldine Valahovic of Erie, Pa., and many great- and great-great nieces and nephews. Upon cremation, she will be buried at sea along the Pacific Coast near San Diego. Donations if desired can be made in her name to the Wounded Warrior program at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
