Richard G. "Papa" Chilcott, age 80, of Lawrence Park, was lovingly surrounded by his family when he passed away at his residence, on Thursday, July 17, 2014. He was born in Wesleyville on July 7, 1934, son of the late Raymond and Sarah Chilcott.

Dick was a 1952 graduate of Harbor Creek High School. He was a graduate of the General Electric Apprentice Program and was employed at GE for 38 years, until his retirement. Dick was a member of St. Mark the Evangelist R.C. Church, East Erie Moose Club, Lawrence Park Historical Society, Erie Magic Club, and a former member of the Perry Squares Dance Club. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards, woodworking and was a golf statistician for his many friends. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his new great-granddaughter.

For Dick, the world was a place that didn't recognize the word stranger. Family defined him, but the size of the family that gathered around him stretched as constantly as one of the rubber bands he always carried around, ready to do some magic illusion work at a moment's notice.

His physical heart was a battered muscle that should have stopped years ago, but his emotional heart proved superhuman, keeping him alive for a period that astounded cardiologists, but delighted the large circle of people who couldn't imagine a day without the chance to share some laughs, and take in the sunset sky from the back porch swing with Papa. The kindness of that heart spread to many in his unending acts of generosity, #PapaStrong.

Dick is lovingly survived by his wife of 59 years, Rosemarie Pratt Chilcott; four daughters, Linda Bartlett (Mickey), Karen Barringer (Scott), Debbie Bennett (Ken), Mary Ann "Mez" Chilcott (Ed Pecoy); two sons, Richard and Douglas Chilcott; one brother, Jack Chilcott (Jennie); two sisters, Patsy Abele and Judie Helffrich (Jim); 11 grandchildren, Jason and Karey Bartlett, Jen and Dan Chilcott, Sarah Learn (Ryan), Daniel and Steven Barringer, Kristin, Matthew and Emily Bennett, Josh Pecoy; one great-granddaughter, Molly Rose Learn; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Bartlett; four brothers, Eugene, Curtis, Donald and James Chilcott; two sisters, Shirley Veit and Mary Bell. A special thanks to Bonnie and Sen for their compassionate care for so long.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Sunday, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend a prayer service there Monday at 10:15 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m., at St. Mark the Evangelist R.C. Church. Interment will be at St. Gregory Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emmaus Ministries / Soup Kitchen, 345 East 9th Street, Erie, PA 16503, or the Iroquois School District Foundation for an annual scholarship in the Chilcott name awarded to a senior at Iroquois High School, 800 Tyndall Ave., Erie, PA 16511.
