Samuel Michael Gangemi, age 82, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at the St. Vincent Health Center, after an extended illness. He resided in Erie. He was born in Kane, Pa., September 25, 1926, a son of the late Arcangelo and Francesca Costanzi Gangemi.

He is survived by his children: Sandy (Angela) Scholze and her husband Marty of Boardman, Ohio, Sammy Lee Gangemi and his wife Helen of Erie, Shawn R. Gangemi and his girlfriend Marsha Bailey of Erie and Scott D. Gangemi of Erie. He is also survived by a brother Paul Gangemi of Erie, a sister Angeline Lewis of Erie, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a close friend Kittie, and many nieces and nephews.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife Lois "Dolly" Crawford Gangemi, and two sisters Brandy Tovey and Mary Lake.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines. Sam worked 20 years each for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Erie Engine Manufacturing (where he helped make the bolts for the Golden Gate Bridge), and at Rubber City Manufacturing, from where he retired. Sam was a former member of St. Ann R.C. Church. He was an avid gardener where he grew his famous hot peppers. He enjoyed riding roller coasters and loved to ride the Ravine Flyer at Waldameer Park. Sam volunteered at Rolling Meadows to help children with disabilities bowl.

Friends may call at the G. R. Bailey Funeral Home, 4396 Iroquois Avenue, Lawrence Park, Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Service will be celebrated Saturday morning at the funeral home, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
